FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does NEC Article 690 require UL 4703 PV Wire instead of standard USE-2 on transformerless / ungrounded solar arrays?
Standard USE-2 is only rated up to 600 V, lacks mandatory VW-1 vertical flame retardancy, is only tested to -20 °C cold impact, and has a thinner 45–60 mil insulation wall. UL 4703 PV Wire provides a heavier 75–85 mil XLPE wall rated to 1,000 V / 2,000 V DC, passes VW-1 flame, 720-hour UV and -40 °C cold impact tests, and is permitted on both grounded and ungrounded arrays.
How does North American UL 4703 PV Wire compare to European EN 50618 (H1Z2Z2-K) solar cable?
UL 4703 PV Wire uses 19-strand (or 7/37-strand) AWG/kcmil conductors with a single or co-extruded thick XLPE wall (rated 600/1000/2000 V DC per NEC) and UL Direct Burial certification. European EN 50618 (H1Z2Z2-K) uses Class 5 fine-stranded metric tinned copper (4, 6, 10 mm²) with dual-wall halogen-free electron-beam cross-linked elastomer rated 1.5 kV DC (1.8 kV max). Many utility projects specify dual-certified UL 4703 + EN 50618 / TÜV 2 PfG 1169 cables.
Why are 1500 V DC utility-scale solar plants wired with 2000 V UL 4703 PV Wire?
UL 4703 defines standard voltage tiers at 600 V, 1000 V and 2000 V. For 1,500 V DC string and central inverter architectures (where cold-morning Voc approaches 1,500 V DC), NEC requires the 2,000 V UL 4703 voltage class.
Can 1/0 AWG to 750 kcmil PV Wire be installed in open cable trays?
Yes. Sizes 1/0 AWG and larger pass the IEEE 1202 / UL 1685 vertical tray flame test and carry the 'FOR CT USE' (Cable Tray) surface marking.
