Why do 7-core, 13-core and 15-core trailer cables mix 1.5 mm² and 2.5 mm² conductors inside the same jacket?
While individual tail lamps, indicators and marker lights draw only 1–3 A (handled by 1.5 mm² cores), the common chassis return (white core, pin 31), trailer battery charging and permanent 12 V / 24 V supply carry the combined return current of multiple circuits and require 2.5 mm² cores to prevent voltage drop over a 13.6 m semi-trailer.
Which cable configuration matches ISO 12098 (15-pin 24 V) and ISO 11446 (13-pin 12 V)?
ISO 12098 (the modern 24 V commercial truck-trailer 15-pin connector replacing dual 7-pin ISO 1185 + ISO 3731 plugs) uses 12×1.5 mm² + 3×2.5 mm². ISO 11446 (the European 12 V 13-pin passenger car and caravan connector) uses 8×1.5 mm² + 5×2.5 mm².
How is the 7-core ISO 7638 EBS brake cable constructed?
An ISO 7638 7-core EBS cable contains two heavy power cores (2×4.0 mm² or 2×6.0 mm²) for modulator valve power and ground, three 1.5 mm² cores for ignition-switched Electronics supply/return and warning lamp, plus a dedicated twisted pair of 2×1.5 mm² cores for the ISO 11992 truck-to-trailer CAN bus.
When should I specify a PUR (FLRY11Y) outer jacket instead of PVC (FLRYY)?
Use PVC (FLRYY) for fixed routing clamped along trailer chassis beams. Specify polyurethane PUR (FLRY11Y) for tractor-to-trailer coiled 'suzie' leads, drawbar articulation loops and ADR tankers where elastic coil recovery at -40 °C and extreme cut/drag resistance across the catwalk deck are essential.
