FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does an X-ray cathode cable have 3 or 4 central conductors inside a single high-voltage insulation wall?
An X-ray tube cathode sits at −75 kV to −160 kV DC relative to ground, yet its tungsten filaments require low-voltage, high-current AC/DC heating (typically 5–15 V, 4–12 A) to emit electrons, plus a 1–4 kV bias on the Wehnelt focusing cup/grid. Running 3 or 4 individually insulated low-voltage conductors inside the central semiconductive equipotential core allows one HV cable to supply both −160 kV DC and dual-focus filament heating.
How can two 75 kV DC cables operate a 150 kVp medical X-ray tube?
Medical diagnostic X-ray tubes use a bipolar (center-grounded) circuit: the cathode cable is driven to −75 kV DC and the anode cable is driven to +75 kV DC relative to the grounded tube housing, producing a 150 kVp accelerating potential across the tube using two compact 75 kV cables.
Why is low cable capacitance (110–145 pF/m) important in pulsed fluoroscopy and radiographic exposures?
In high-frequency inverter X-ray generators, the cable capacitance acts as a smoothing filter but also stores electrostatic energy (E = ½ C V²). Excessive cable capacitance slows down kVp rise/fall times during millisecond radiographic pulses and causes post-exposure afterglow radiation.
What is the difference between NEMA XR7 (CA11/CA12) and European EN 60522 (R10/R24/R30) X-ray cones?
NEMA XR7 (Federal Standard CA11 3-pin and CA12 4-pin) is the universal standard on medical diagnostic X-ray tubes (75–100 kV DC). European EN/IEC 60522 rubber-cone terminals (R10 for 100 kV, R24 for 160/225 kV, and R30 for 300 kV) are standard on industrial NDT, security, and analytical X-ray systems.
