FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why specify a Tinned Copper Braid Shield instead of a helical Copper Tape Shield on flexible MV-105 cables?
Standard MV-105 distribution cables use a 5 mil overlapped copper tape shield, which restricts the minimum bend radius to 12 × OD because tighter bending causes the rigid copper tape edges to buckle and cut into the semiconducting layer. A flexible tinned copper wire braid shield expands and contracts smoothly around tight 6 × OD bends inside switchgear and motor terminal boxes without damaging the stress screen.
What should installers know when crimping lugs onto Class I (24 AWG) or Class K (30 AWG) flexible MV conductors?
Fine rope-lay Class I/K conductors have a slightly larger uncompressed diameter than Class B 37-strand conductors of the same AWG/kcmil size. Always use flared-entry compression lugs and dies rated for flexible Class I/K (or DLO) stranding inside your 3M / Raychem cold-shrink termination kit.
What is the difference between 100 % and 133 % insulation level on 15 kV MV-105?
100 % insulation level (175 mil / 4.45 mm EPR wall on 15 kV) is used on grounded systems where ground faults are cleared within 1 minute. 133 % insulation level (220 mil / 5.59 mm EPR wall on 15 kV) is used on ungrounded, high-resistance-grounded or resonant-grounded industrial/generator systems where a ground fault may persist for up to 1 hour—and is often chosen by data centres and refineries for an extra dielectric safety margin.
Is Type MV-105 Flexible approved for permanent NEC raceway and cable tray installations (unlike portable SHD-GC or W cable)?
Yes. Because it carries full UL 1072 Type MV-105 + 'FOR CT USE' listing, NEC Article 328 permits permanent installation in cable trays, ducts, raceways and direct burial across the facility.
