FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do engineers choose between TR-XLPE (Type MV-90) and EPR (Type MV-105)?
Tree-Retardant XLPE (MV-90, +90 °C) has lower dielectric constant (εᵣ ≈ 2.3), lower dielectric loss, lighter weight and lower cost—making it the dominant choice for long 25 kV and 34.5 kV underground utility, wind and solar collector trenches. EPR (MV-105, +105 °C) offers ~10 % higher ampacity (+105 °C continuous / +140 °C overload), much greater flexibility in cold weather, and total immunity to water trees—making it preferred for industrial plants, refineries, data centres and substation risers.
When should we specify a 5 mil Copper Tape Shield versus a Concentric Copper Wire Shield?
A 5 mil overlapped Copper Tape Shield provides 100 % metallic coverage and is standard for industrial cable trays and conduit feeders where a separate equipment grounding conductor is run or fault currents are moderate. A Concentric Copper Wire Shield (1/6, 1/3 or full neutral) is preferred on direct-buried utility and renewable collector feeders because the round wires carry higher ground-fault currents and terminate faster into deadbreak elbows without soldering/spring-clamping a tape.
What is the role of AEIC CS8 beyond basic UL 1072 listing?
While UL 1072 governs fire, safety and NEC code compliance, AEIC CS8 (Association of Edison Illuminating Companies) enforces stricter utility-grade extrusion cleanliness, supersmooth semiconducting compound protrusion limits (< 50 µm), tighter partial-discharge testing and accelerated water-treeing life qualification.
If we need a tighter bend radius inside our 15 kV switchgear than Class B MV-105 allows, what is the solution?
Specify our Type MV-105 Flexible Single-Conductor Cable (with Class I/K rope-lay tinned copper and a flexible tinned copper braid shield), which reduces the minimum bend radius from 12 × OD down to 6–8 × OD.
