FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What makes Type MC-HL (UL 2225) fundamentally different from standard Type MC or TECK90?
Standard Type MC (UL 1569) and TECK90 use an interlocked helical metal strip armour, which has microscopic spiral seams and is restricted under the US NEC to Class I Division 2. Type MC-HL (UL 2225) forms a solid aluminum strip into a tube, continuously TIG/laser welds the longitudinal seam and annularly corrugates it (CWCMC). Because the welded metallic sheath is 100 % gas-, vapour- and liquid-impervious and passes rigid-conduit-level crush tests, NEC 501.10(A)(1)(c) permits MC-HL in Class I Division 1 (and Zone 1) hazardous locations.
Why is MC-HL with 3 symmetrical ground conductors the gold standard for VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) motor feeders?
IGBT inverters generate fast-rising PWM voltage pulses that induce high-frequency common-mode currents and radiated EMI. The 360° solid welded aluminum tube acts as an unbroken Faraday cage with ultra-low transfer impedance, while the three bare copper ground wires placed at 120° in the phase interstices cancel magnetic unbalance and return common-mode currents symmetrically to the drive.
How much installation labour does MC-HL save compared with rigid galvanized steel conduit in Class I Div 1?
Field studies on petrochemical and LNG projects show that running MC-HL on open ladder cable trays with UL 2225 barrier glands reduces total installed cost by 40 % to 60 % compared with threading, bending, pulling and pouring explosion-proof seals in rigid galvanized conduit.
Can MC-HL be buried directly underground or installed on offshore platforms?
Yes. The impervious welded aluminum sheath combined with the Oil Resistant II / Sunlight Resistant outer PVC or CPE jacket is listed for direct burial, concrete encasement, open cable trays and USCG/ABS offshore marine decks.
