Application fit

Is MGM 109 Type 1023 / 1024 right for your machine?

Engineered for underground coal mine gate roads, incline shafts, haulage drifts, and gate-end box distribution where roof-fall crush loads and vertical suspension require Double Wire Armour (DWA).

Fixed installation

Suitable

Two counter-wound galvanized steel wire armour layers resist roof-fall rock impact and eliminate tensile twist in vertical shafts.

Switchgear & control cabinet wiring

Suitable

Terminates directly into flameproof BS 6708 / NCB half-couplers, bolted couplers, and gate-end switchgear.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

Bitumen/wax corrosion compound over the DWA layers plus heavy PVC sheath protects against acidic mine water.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

How do the four digits in MGM 109 Type 1023 and Type 1024 decode?
In the British Coal MGM 109 / MGM 118 4-digit type code: Digit 1 is the voltage class ('1' = 640/1100 V, '3' = 1.9/3.3 kV, '6' = 3.8/6.6 kV); Digit 2 is core screening ('0' = unscreened, '1' = individually copper-screened); Digit 3 is the armour ('1' = Single Wire Armour SWA, '2' = Double Wire Armour DWA); and Digit 4 is the number of cores ('3' = 3-core, '4' = 4-core).
Why does British mining practice require the armour conductance to be at least 75 % of one phase conductor?
In underground mines without a separate insulated earth core inside 3-core roadway cables, the wire armour serves as the primary protective earth return path. To guarantee that ≥ 75 % conductance is achieved on larger cross-sections (≥ 70 mm²), high-conductivity tinned copper wires are interspersed among the galvanized steel armour wires.
When should I specify Double Wire Armour (Type 1023/1024 DWA) instead of Single Wire Armour (Type 1013/1014 SWA)?
Specify Double Wire Armour (DWA) whenever the feeder is suspended vertically in a mine shaft, laid down a steep incline drift, or routed along active longwall gate roads subject to convergence and rock-fall crush loads. The two counter-helical wire layers cancel torsional unlaying tension and double radial crush strength.
Why is 90 °C EPR (Type GP4) insulation used instead of PVC in MGM 109 cables?
Cross-linked GP4 EPR operates continuously at +90 °C, provides superior flexibility when hauling heavy armoured drums around tight underground roadway junctions, and resists thermal deformation under cyclic coal-face motor starting currents. Each production drum undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance verification, insulation thickness gauging,
