FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the triboelectric effect in piezoelectric sensor cables, and how does this cable eliminate it?
When a standard coaxial cable bends or vibrates, the outer copper braid rubs and momentarily separates from the PTFE core insulation. Friction between the metal braid and dielectric strips electrons and traps static charges on the insulator surface, injecting false picocoulomb spikes directly into the charge amplifier. Our Low-Noise Cable bonds a semi-conductive carbon/graphite-PTFE layer over the virgin PTFE dielectric so any separated charge is instantaneously equalised with the shield.
Do IEPE (ICP® / constant-current voltage-mode) accelerometers require low-noise triboelectric cable?
IEPE accelerometers contain a built-in MOSFET preamplifier that converts the high-impedance charge signal into a low-impedance (< 100 Ω) voltage signal inside the sensor housing, making them largely immune to triboelectric cable noise under normal vibration. However, high-temperature charge-mode accelerometers (> +165 °C, where internal electronics cannot survive) always require low-noise triboelectric cable.
When should I choose Differential Twisted-Pair (PIEZO-LN-TP) instead of 50 Ω Coaxial (PIEZO-LN-50)?
Specify 50 Ω Coaxial for laboratory modal testing and single-ended charge amplifiers (10-32 UNF / BNC). Specify Differential Twisted-Pair (PIEZO-LN-TP) for industrial gas turbines, aero-engines, and long cable runs where a balanced differential charge amplifier rejects common-mode ground-loop and ignition noise.
How should the screen and drain wire of Low-Noise Cable for Piezoelectric Sensors be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of Low-Noise Cable for Piezoelectric Sensors should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
