FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is IEEE 1580 Type LSX insulation and how does it differ from Type P?
Both Type P and Type LSX are flexible cross-linked elastomers defined in IEEE 1580 for marine and offshore drilling cables, using fine-stranded tinned copper conductors. While traditional Type P uses brominated flame retardants, Type LSX is a low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) cross-linked polyolefin (< 0.5 % HCl acid gas, ≥ 60 % light transmittance).
When should I use LSX Unarmoured single-conductor cable instead of LSX Armoured and Sheathed?
Single-core unarmoured LSX is specified inside enclosed switchboards, VFD propulsion cubicles, generator terminal boxes, and protected ladder racks where maximum ampacity, tight 4×D bending radii, and absence of magnetic armour eddy-current heating are required. Each production drum undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance verification,
Why are LSX conductors dual-marked in both AWG/kcmil (DLO sizes) and metric mm²?
North American Gulf-of-Mexico drilling rigs and USCG vessels specify diesel-locomotive (DLO) kcmil sizes (such as 262.6, 373.7, 444.4, 535.3, 646.4, and 777.7 kcmil) under IEEE 1580/UL 1309, while international shipyards specify IEC 60092 metric sizes (120 to 400 mm²). Dual marking simplifies global class inspection.
Why choose the 2.0 kV (2000 V) rated LSX single-conductor cable for 690 V AC VFD drives?
On pulse-width-modulated (PWM) 690 V AC marine thruster and mud-pump drives, high dV/dt voltage reflections can produce repetitive 1.5–1.8 kV voltage spikes at motor terminals. Specifying the 2.0 kV Type LSX wall thickness (tested at 6.5 kV AC) prevents corona and insulation breakdown. Each
