FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What causes triboelectric cable noise, and how does HSC Low-Noise Triaxial eliminate it?
When an ordinary coaxial cable bends or vibrates, the outer metal braid rubs against the polymer OEM, separating frictional (triboelectric) static charges of tens to hundreds of picocoulombs that look identical to partial-discharge pulses or radiation detector events. HSC Low-Noise Triaxial bonds a semiconductive carbon/graphite damping layer directly to the OEM under the inner guard braid, short-circuiting any frictional charge locally before it can induce a voltage pulse.
Why does a high-voltage PD bridge or electrometer require a triaxial cable instead of a coaxial cable?
In a coaxial cable, the single outer braid serves as both the signal return and the external EMI/safety ground, allowing 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents and RF interference on the test-bay floor to develop voltage drops across the braid resistance. In a triaxial cable, the outer braid shunts all ground-loop and RF currents to chassis earth, while the isolated inner braid serves as a pure, noise-free signal return or driven guard.
How is the inner guard braid used in a tan-delta (Schering bridge) or picoammeter circuit?
By driving the inner guard braid to the exact same potential as the measurement input (or connecting it to the bridge guard terminal), leakage currents across the cable's outer surface and capacitive currents to ground are completely bypassed around the measuring impedance.
Should I choose HSC-PE (polyethylene/XLPE) or HSC-SIR (silicone) for my application?
Choose HSC-PE when you need 50 Ω or 75 Ω matched impedance, fast pulse rise times (partial discharge location, proportional counters, PMTs), and minimal OEM loss (tan δ ≤ 0.0003). Choose HSC-SIR when you need a limp, rubber-flexible benchtop test lead or wide −50 °C to +150 °C temperature capability.
