FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why must single-conductor armoured AC power cables use non-magnetic bronze, copper, or aluminum braid?
If a single-phase or single-core AC conductor were surrounded by a magnetic steel armour, the alternating magnetic field would induce severe hysteresis and eddy-current heating in the armour. IEEE 45 and IEEE 1580 mandate non-magnetic Commercial Bronze (BS), Tinned Copper (TS), or Aluminum (AS) braids on all single-core armoured cables.
How do the IEEE 1580 armour suffixes -BS, -TS, and -AS differ?
Under IEEE 1580 naming rules, '-B' denotes a Commercial Bronze (90 % Cu / 10 % Zn) basket-weave wire braid for maximum salt-water corrosion and abrasion resistance; '-T' denotes a Tinned Copper wire braid for highest EMC shielding and ground-fault conductivity; '-A' denotes a lightweight Aluminum wire braid; and 'S' denotes the outer protective LSZH sheath.
How does IEEE 1580 LSX Armoured compare with British BS 6883 Type A offshore cable?
Both are halogen-free, wire-braid armoured offshore and marine power cables with tinned copper conductors. IEEE 1580 Type LSX uses North American AWG/kcmil (or dual metric) flexible Class 5 stranding and 100/110 °C XLPO insulation, while BS 6883 uses IEC Class 2/5 metric sizes, 90 °C EPR GP4 insulation, and SW4 elastomeric sheaths.
Is the tinned copper or bronze braid suitable as a VFD EMC shield?
Yes. With ≥ 88 % optical basket-weave coverage and 360° termination via EMC marine compression glands, the tinned copper (-TS) or bronze (-BS) braid provides low-impedance high-frequency common-mode screening for 690 V AC VFD propulsion and thruster feeders. Each production drum undergoes 100 %
