FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between KX (extension cable) and KCA / KCB (compensating cables)?
KX is a true extension cable whose conductors are made from the exact same Nickel-Chromium (+ NiCr) and Nickel-Aluminium (− NiAl) alloys as the Type K thermocouple itself, achieving Class 1 (±1.5 °C) accuracy from −25 °C to +200 °C. KCA (Fe/CuNi, 0 to +200 °C) and KCB (Cu/CuNi, 0 to +100 °C) use lower-cost substitute alloys and are only rated to Class 2 (±2.5 °C).
How can a field technician quickly distinguish the positive (+) and negative (−) KX conductors if the insulation is stripped back?
In addition to the colour code (IEC: + Green / − White; ANSI: + Yellow / − Red), the negative NiAl conductor is noticeably magnetic and will attract a small pocket magnet, whereas the positive NiCr conductor is non-magnetic.
Why must Type K thermocouples never be extended using standard copper instrumentation cable (RE-2Y(st)Y)?
Connecting copper wires to a NiCr/NiAl thermocouple terminal head creates a parasitic cold junction directly inside the hot furnace head box. Any temperature difference between the furnace head box and the control room cold-junction sensor will appear directly as a 1:1 measurement error (often 30 °C to 150 °C off).
How should the screen and drain wire of KX / Type K extension be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of KX / Type K extension should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
