How do JIS C 3410 cable letter prefixes (D, T, F, 5, 6) work?
In JIS C 3410 nomenclature, the prefix indicates the number of cores: 'D' = Double (2 cores), 'T' = Triple (3 cores), 'F' = Four (4 cores), '5' = 5 cores, and '6' = 6 cores. 'P' stands for EP-rubber insulation (+90 °C), and 'Y' stands for a vinyl (PVC) sheath.
When is unarmoured DPY/TPY/FPY chosen instead of armoured DPYC/TPYC/FPYC?
Unarmoured DPY/TPY/FPY is used in protected interior spaces, accommodation areas, and enclosed trunks where mechanical wire-braid protection ('C') is not mandated by classification societies (NK, ABS, DNV, Lloyd's).
Why are JIS shipboard conductor sizes like 14 mm² and 38 mm² different from IEC sizes?
JIS C 3410 retains traditional Japanese nominal conductor cross-sections (such as 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 5.5, 8, 14, 22, 30, 38, 50, 60, 80, 100 mm²) alongside modern IEC-harmonized sizes.
