FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

What is the difference between KCA and KCB compensating cables?
Both KCA and KCB are compensating cables for Type K thermocouples, but they use different conductor alloys and cover different transition-head temperature ranges. KCA uses Iron (+ Fe) and Copper-Nickel (− CuNi 275) and is calibrated from 0 °C to +200 °C. KCB uses Copper (+ Cu) and Copper-Nickel (− CuNi) and is calibrated only from 0 °C to +100 °C. Use KCA when furnace connection heads exceed +100 °C.
Which conductor in KCA is magnetic?
In KCA, the Positive (+ Fe, Green in IEC) conductor is strongly magnetic because it is thermoelectric iron, whereas the Negative (− CuNi, White in IEC) conductor is non-magnetic. Note that this is the opposite of true KX cable, where the Negative (− NiAl) leg is magnetic.
Why choose KCA over true KX extension cable on long trunk runs?
KCA reduces Nickel-Chromium alloy cost on large 12-pair or 24-pair trunk cables and cuts loop resistance from ~1.00 Ω/m to ~0.45 Ω/m at 1.0 mm², while still supporting +200 °C junction boxes.
How should the screen and drain wire of KCA be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of KCA should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
