FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why must care be taken not to confuse IEC 60584-3 and ANSI MC96.1 colour codes on Type JX cable?
Both standards use a White conductor inside a Black outer jacket, but the polarity of the White wire is reversed! Under IEC 60584-3, Positive (+) is Black and Negative (−) is White; under ANSI MC96.1, Positive (+) is White and Negative (−) is Red. Checking with a magnet is foolproof: the Positive (+ Fe) Iron wire is always strongly magnetic.
Why does Type J use a true extension cable (JX) rather than a compensating cable (JC)?
Because Iron (Fe) and Copper-Nickel (CuNi) are already base metals, true thermocouple-grade Fe/CuNi wires are economical enough to use for the entire extension cable run, providing Class 1 (±1.5 °C) accuracy without needing a substitute compensating alloy.
Can KCA (Fe/CuNi compensating cable for Type K) be interchanged with JX (Fe/CuNi extension cable for Type J)?
No! Even though both use an Iron positive leg and a Copper-Nickel negative leg, the CuNi alloy composition in KCA is specially formulated to match the ~40.6 µV/°C slope of Type K, whereas JX uses a 55Cu/45Ni alloy calibrated to the ~52.6 µV/°C slope of Type J.
How should the screen and drain wire of JX / Type J extension be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of JX / Type J extension should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
