FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between SCP and SYP in JIS C 3410?
Under JIS C 3410 ('S' = Switchboard wire), 'SCP' uses thermoset ethylene-propylene rubber ('P') core insulation with a protective polychloroprene ('C') outer layer rated +85/+90 °C, whereas 'SYP' uses thermoplastic flame-retardant vinyl ('Y' = PVC) insulation for compact +60/+75 °C panel wiring.
When should marine panel builders choose SCP over SYP?
Choose SCP for main switchboards (MSB), motor starter cubicles and engine-room local panels where ambient temperatures are high and thermoset cross-linked insulation prevents shrinkage or melting at high-current terminal lugs. Choose SYP for low-current relay logic, indicator lamps and bridge mimic panels where smaller wire diameter is preferred.
Why are sizes 1.25 mm², 2.0 mm², 3.5 mm² and 5.5 mm² listed alongside 1.5 mm² and 2.5 mm²?
Traditional Japanese marine switchboards and JIS ring/fork crimp terminals are sized in metric JIS steps (0.75, 1.25, 2.0, 3.5, 5.5 mm²), while IEC-aligned vessels use 0.75, 1.5, 2.5, 4.0 and 6.0 mm². Both series are available.
Can SCP or SYP be routed outside the switchboard cabinet?
No. SCP and SYP are single-core internal switchboard and console hook-up wires. For external shipboard cable runs between cabinets and field equipment, use sheathed/armoured MPY, MPYC or MPYCY control cables.
