FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does the 'D' stand for in FLRYDY?
In DIN 72551 cable nomenclature, 'D' designates a metallic wire screen (Drahtschirm—either a helically served copper spiral screen or a braided copper wire shield) applied over the FLRY core assembly before the outer PVC sheath ('Y') is extruded.
What is the difference between a spiral copper screen and a braided copper screen in FLRYDY?
A spiral (helically lapped) copper screen has a smaller outer diameter, bends more easily and can be untwisted into a neat ground pig-tail in seconds without cutting strands. A braided copper screen maintains higher shield coverage under torsional flexing and provides lower transfer impedance above 30 MHz.
Why are knock sensors and crankshaft sensors wired with FLRYDY instead of unshielded twisted pairs?
Piezoelectric knock sensors and variable-reluctance crankshaft pickups output high-impedance millivolt signals that pass directly alongside ignition coils, alternator leads and EV traction inverters; the ≥85 % copper screen shunts capacitive and inductive interference to chassis ground.
Can FLRYDY be supplied with +125 °C cores and jacket?
Yes. For hot engine-block sensor zones up to +125 °C, the cable can be built as FLRYWDYW (heat-resistant PVC cores + copper screen + heat-resistant PVC jacket) or FLR2XDYW (XLPE cores).
