FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does an Encoder Feedback Cable combine 0.14 mm² signal pairs with thicker 0.5 mm² or 1.0 mm² cores?
Optical encoders such as Heidenhain EnDat and SinCos 1 Vpp require a tightly regulated 5.0 V ± 5 % DC supply at the sensor head, while drawing 150 to 300 mA. If 0.14 mm² wires (138 Ω/km) were used for the 5 V supply over a 25 m drag-chain run, ohmic voltage drop would cause encoder under-voltage faults. Dedicated 0.5 mm² or 1.0 mm² supply cores plus remote sense lines keep 5 V regulation exact.
What is the difference between Encoder Feedback Cable and Resolver Feedback Cable?
Optical and digital encoders transmit high-frequency differential clock/data or 1 Vpp Sin/Cos signals and rely heavily on low-capacitance PP pairs plus heavy 5 V supply cores (e.g. 4×2×0.14 + 4×0.5). Magnetic resolvers operate at 4–10 kHz carrier excitation with higher excitation voltage and require individually screened twisted pairs — such as 3×(2×0.14)C + (2×0.5)C — to prevent phase-shift cross-talk between Sin, Cos, and Reference windings.
Why is low pair capacitance (≈ 50 pF/m) critical for EnDat 2.2, SSI, and BiSS-C absolute encoders?
Serial absolute encoders transmit RS-485 differential clock and data pulses at up to 16 MHz. Standard PVC insulation (~120 pF/m) rounds off the rising edges and increases propagation delay skew over runs longer than 15 m. Polypropylene (PP) insulation (~50 pF/m) preserves sharp square-wave edges up to 50–100 m.
Why is the outer PUR sheath coloured green (RAL 6018)?
Green (RAL 6018) is the DESINA® standard colour assigned to position measuring and encoder feedback cables on machine tools and robotics, allowing instant visual separation from orange (RAL 2003) servo power cables.
