FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do BS 6195 Type 4A, Type 4C and Type 4D differ in insulation and temperature rating?
All three types use Class 5 flexible tinned copper conductors to BS EN 60228, but differ in thermal class to match machine insulation systems: Type 4A uses EPR insulation with a CSP outer sheath for −40 to +90 °C (Class Y/A/E); Type 4D uses halogen-free EVA/EPR for −40 to +110 °C (Class B/F varnish baking); and Type 4C uses silicone rubber with a lacquered glass-fibre braid for −60 to +150 °C (Class H).
What voltage categories are defined in BS 6195 for single-core coil leads?
BS 6195 grades radial insulation thickness by system voltage and fault-clearing category: Category 2 is rated 600/1000 V (3 kV AC test), Category 3 is rated 1900/3300 V (10 kV AC test), Category 4 is rated 3800/6600 V (16 kV AC test), and Category 5 is rated 6350/11000 V (24 kV AC test).
Why are BS 6195 cables specified for motor and transformer winding terminations?
Unlike standard power cables whose sheaths swell, crack or bleed plasticiser during vacuum-pressure varnish impregnation (VPI) and oven curing, BS 6195 Type 4A, 4C and 4D compounds are formulated to withstand impregnating varnishes, baking temperatures and transformer oil while remaining flexible enough for tight terminal-box routing.
Can BS 6195 Type 4A/4D be used on crane festoons or high-speed reeling drums?
BS 6195 single-core cables are suitable for supported festoon loops, slip-ring collector leads and short flexible jumper connections with a minimum bending radius of 6 × OD. They do not contain an anti-torsion braid or metallic phase screen, so for motorized multi-core drum reeling select NSHTÖU (0.6/1 kV) or NTSCGEWÖU (3.6/6–20/35 kV).
