Application fit

Is 400 Hz Aircraft Ground Power Cable right for your machine?

At 400 Hz (8× grid frequency), a conventional 4-core cable suffers severe inductive reactance and skin/proximity effect losses that drop voltage below the aircraft's 115 V ± 3 V window within 15 m. The 6-around-1 phase-split geometry cancels magnetic flux to keep 400 Hz voltage drop negligible across 30–45 m apron runs.

Motorised monospiral reel

Suitable

Reinforced against torsion for motorized under-bridge cable reels, crocodile pantograph booms and mobile GPU tow carts.

Trailing & towing

Suitable

High-visibility Yellow or Orange PUR/CPE jacket survives concrete tarmac dragging, nose-wheel/tug roll-over and -55 °C arctic operations.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

Resists aviation kerosene (Jet-A1), phosphate-ester hydraulic fluid (Skydrol LD-4), potassium-acetate runway de-icers and glycol.

Fixed installation

With conditions

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does a 400 Hz aircraft ground power cable use 7 power conductors (6 phase + 1 neutral) instead of 4?
At 400 Hz, inductive reactance (Xʟ = 2πfL) is 8 times higher than at 50 Hz, and skin/proximity effects push current to the outer surface of large conductors. By splitting each phase into two smaller conductors (2×25 mm² or 2×35 mm²) and arranging them in alternating sequence A1–B1–C1–A2–B2–C2 around the central neutral, the magnetic fields of adjacent phases cancel out—cutting 400 Hz reactance by more than 60 % and keeping voltage at the aircraft plug within ISO 6858 tolerances.
Why is the central Neutral conductor sized larger in cross-section than each individual phase core?
In the 6-around-1 lay, the central neutral core is thermally surrounded by all 6 phase cores and carries unbalanced phase currents plus 3rd-order (1,200 Hz) triplen harmonic currents generated by aircraft avionics rectifiers. Using a 35 or 50 mm² central neutral equalizes the geometric pitch diameter of the 6 outer phase cores while preventing neutral overheating.
What is the purpose of the 28 V DC E and F interlock control cores?
When the ISO 461 6-pole plug is seated into the aircraft receptacle, shorter pins E and F complete a 28 V DC safety interlock loop back to the 400 Hz GPU converter. If the plug is pulled or partially dislodged, pins E and F break contact first, tripping the GPU contactor in milliseconds before the main 260–500 A pins can draw an arc.
Can we order this cable factory-terminated with moulded ISO 461 90 kVA / 180 kVA aircraft plugs?
Yes. We supply both bulk reel lengths for airport electrical contractors and ready-to-hang boarding-bridge stinger assemblies with vulcanized ISO 461 plugs.
