UL AWM & DESINA Servo Cable Guide: NFPA 79 & PO Checklist

Check UL AWM recognition, installation suitability, DESINA identification and dynamic servo-cable evidence as separate procurement requirements.

A servo cable can have a recognized AWM construction, a DESINA jacket color and a dynamic-life claim, yet still be unsuitable for a particular machine. These descriptions address different questions. Procurement must verify the exact construction, intended installation and movement duty rather than combining labels into a blanket approval.

Verify AWM recognition and the installation route

UL Appliance Wiring Material recognition is tied to specified constructions and conditions of acceptability. Check the actual manufacturer’s file, style, voltage, temperature and intended use. A generic style number or an unverified file placeholder is not evidence of recognition for the supplied cable.

Determine whether the application permits AWM or requires another listed cable type. NFPA 79 and other installation requirements must be applied to the actual machine and jurisdiction. There is no general rule that every 480 V machine requires a 1000 V AWM cable, nor does a dual marking automatically authorize one construction for every country or wiring location.

Use DESINA identification correctly

DESINA is an installation standardization concept associated with machine-tool wiring. LAPP’s identification table includes orange RAL 2003 for screened servo cables and green RAL 6018 for screened measuring-system cables. These sheath colors identify functions; they do not establish electrical rating or flex life. A green jacket must not be confused with green/yellow protective-conductor identification.

ISO 23529 concerns the preparation and conditioning of rubber test pieces for physical tests. It is not the source of DESINA jacket colors or a servo-cable installation approval.

Specify dynamic and environmental performance separately

  • State carrier geometry, travel, bend radius, speed, acceleration, torsion and the complete cable arrangement.
  • Request endurance results for the offered construction under representative conditions, including the cycle definition and failure criteria.
  • Identify actual coolant or cleaning fluids, concentration, temperature and contact duration. An oil-resistance designation does not prove compatibility with every formulation.
  • Specify shield terminations and signal requirements for the drive system; jacket color and braid appearance do not establish EMC performance.

Do not combine unrelated safety claims

A flame-test result does not demonstrate halogen-free materials or low smoke. Separate those requirements and verify their respective methods. Similarly, an IP67 connector rating does not automatically imply resistance to high-pressure cleaning, hermetic sealing or compatibility with every fluid. Check the complete mated assembly, cable entry and the manufacturer’s stated test conditions.

A practical purchase-order checklist

  • Identify cable manufacturer, exact product and construction revision, markings and independently verifiable approval records.
  • Record installation jurisdiction, machine wiring requirements, voltage and temperature limits, and whether field wiring is involved.
  • Include connector drawings, pin assignments, protective bonding and permitted assembly methods.
  • Agree dynamic qualification evidence, environmental tests, routine acceptance checks and traceable production records before release.

Require the supplier to distinguish documented approvals from proposed design targets. A declaration of conformity should identify what was assessed and against which requirements; it should not promise inspection acceptance without reviewing the actual installation.
