Robot Cable Torsion Qualification: Test Rig and Purchase Specification

Technical article

Define robot-cable torsion angles, gauge length, bending, fault monitoring and acceptance criteria before specifying a multi-million-cycle target.

A robot cable may twist, bend and slide through a dress pack within the same movement. A credible endurance requirement describes these loads together. A target of several million cycles is a test objective until a representative construction has completed the agreed program with documented results.

Define torsion in reproducible terms

  • State the free gauge length, angular movement at each end, direction, speed, acceleration and dwell.
  • Distinguish total rotation from rotation per metre; record any axial tension, bend radius and cable restraint.
  • Define one cycle explicitly, including whether it includes both directions and return to the reference position.
  • Specify temperature, fluids and neighboring hoses or cables where their contact affects the motion.

A short straight torsion specimen may not represent an articulated robot dress pack. Conversely, an application-specific robot trial may not isolate the reason for a failure. Use the appropriate combination of component qualification and representative system testing.

Plan test duration honestly

Hypothetical scheduling example: five million cycles at a continuous rate of 35 complete cycles per minute require about 2381 hours, or 99.2 days, before allowing for inspections and downtime. Changing the cycle definition changes this calculation. The example is not a statement that any product has passed five million cycles.

Monitor what the application needs

Define continuity, resistance change, insulation integrity, screen condition and signal performance acceptance before testing. A high sampling rate alone does not prove that every short interruption is detectable; thresholds, bandwidth, timing, filtering and event capture must be validated. A single broken strand may not open the complete conductor, so end-point examination can provide information that simple continuity monitoring misses.

Qualified laboratories should use electrical tests appropriate to the product construction and voltage rating. Do not impose a generic high-voltage test from an unrelated cable, or interpret a test on one component as proof of the complete assembly’s safety.

Avoid misleading material and cleanliness claims

IEC 60811-507 describes a hot-set test for applicable materials. Passing that test is not proof that a particular irradiation process was used, nor does it establish torsional life. Material family labels such as polyurethane do not establish the crosslinking state or dynamic performance of the finished cable.

ISO 14644-1 classifies air cleanliness by particle concentration. A claim about cable use in a clean environment needs the applicable test evidence and conditions; it is not automatically a certification of the cable. Paint-wetting compatibility and particle generation are separate requirements.

Purchase-order record

Identify the exact cable construction, test plan, number of specimens, failure criteria, inspection intervals and permitted design changes. Request actual results rather than a test-rig photograph or an unqualified cycle-count headline. Keep installation and replacement criteria tied to the real robot motion.
