PUR vs Rubber Spreader Cables: Basket Duty and Material Selection

Technical article

Compare PUR and rubber spreader-cable constructions against basket motion, hydrolysis, abrasion and verified temperature limits.

Select the complete basket-cable design

A crane spreader cable must manage repeated payout and collection, bending, hanging weight and the actual basket geometry. PUR or rubber describes only part of the construction. Conductor arrangement, tensile members, internal support, torsional behavior and termination details can be equally important.

Commercial names and abbreviated designations must be checked against the manufacturer drawing. A similar sheath label does not prove that two cables have the same dimensions, reinforcement or approved operating duty.

PUR chemistry and hydrolysis

Polyurethane is a family of materials, not a single fixed formulation. BASF describes polyether-based TPU as more resistant to hydrolytic degradation than polyester-based TPU under the discussed conditions. That comparison does not establish absolute immunity to hot water, seawater, cleaning chemicals or ageing.

Request the compound identification and relevant exposure evidence. A cable marked with a sheath designation such as 11YM1 should not be assumed to contain a particular polyether formulation without manufacturer confirmation. Evaluate the actual combination of water, temperature and mechanical stress.

Rubber insulation is not automatically silicone

The cited UTV basket-cable range identifies EPR insulation for its 3GRDGÖU construction. The characters 3G must not be interpreted as proof of silicone insulation or a universal high-temperature capability.

Separate the limits for continuous conductor temperature, ambient temperature while moving, fixed installation and short circuit. A high short-circuit conductor temperature is a temporary fault criterion, not permission to operate the crane cable continuously in equally hot air.

Abrasion data need test conditions

A lower abrasion-volume result can be useful when comparing compounds tested by the same method and conditioning. It does not translate directly into a fixed multiple of cable life in a basket, where cutting, compression, friction, contamination and repeated flexing interact.

A reference to ISO 4649 identifies an abrasion test method; the project or product specification must provide any applicable acceptance limit. Do not infer that every PUR cable must pass the same 50 mm³ threshold or that one laboratory result proves survival in every port.

Basket and termination checks

Confirm cable length, suspended mass, acceleration, basket diameter and shape, feed alignment and the maker bending limits. Check whether the cable is intended for the proposed direction of lay and handling arrangement. A sheath material alone cannot eliminate corkscrewing or birdcaging.

Transfer mechanical loads through the approved support and termination system. Avoid improvised clamps that crush insulation or rely on an unverified load path. Inspect the actual abrasion and bending locations during maintenance and follow defined discard criteria.

Procurement evidence

Specify salt, UV, water, temperature, oil and cleaning exposure alongside motion and load data. Ask for the exact construction drawing and traceable electrical, mechanical and environmental qualification relevant to the duty. No TEBAOFLEX field-life multiplier, fatigue-test result or blanket material ranking is asserted here.
