A hybrid spreader cable combines functions with different failure modes. Power conductors, control cores, protective conductors and optical fibres must all remain suitable for the same mechanical duty. A purchase order should describe that duty before selecting a test load or a cycle count.
Describe the installation completely
- Identify basket, festoon or reel handling; include travel, unsupported length, bend geometry, torsion, speed and acceleration.
- State voltage, current, protective-conductor arrangement, fibre type and count, connector system and optical equipment.
- Provide temperature, fluids, sunlight and abrasion conditions, together with the required service and inspection intervals.
- Distinguish cable tensile capacity from the capacity of its terminations and from loads transferred through separate support members.
Select methods, then agree acceptance criteria
IEC 60794-1-101 defines tensile method E1, and IEC 60794-1-107 defines torsion method E7; their scope includes cables combining optical fibres and electrical conductors. Citing these methods does not assign a universal 25 kN load, a particular cycle life or an allowable attenuation change to every hybrid cable. Specify the applicable edition, specimen, fixtures, loading and acceptance limits.
State whether the mechanical program is a design qualification, a sample check or a routine production test. A destructive breaking-load result cannot be treated as a permissible working load without the relevant design factors and interface limitations. Compare numbers using the same units and conditions.
Build an optical measurement schedule
- Use test wavelengths and equipment appropriate to the actual single-mode or multimode fibre and the link specification.
- Record end-to-end insertion loss and, where useful, OTDR traces with suitable launch and receive arrangements.
- Measure baseline, transient changes during movement and residual changes after unloading when required.
- Record test length, temperature, instrument uncertainty and connector reference conditions; distinguish total loss in dB from attenuation per kilometre.
Include electrical and mechanical acceptance
Check the specified conductor resistance, protective continuity, insulation integrity and cable dimensions using the relevant product requirements. Do not infer a special IEC conductor class from a marketing abbreviation. For dynamic qualification, define which intermittent faults must be detected and how the monitoring system demonstrates that sensitivity.
Termination pull tests, bending trials and environmental exposure should use representative assemblies. The purchase order should state whether the offered construction has already been qualified or whether testing remains to be performed. Requested targets must not be represented as completed FAT results.
Records needed for release
Require drum identification, construction revision, measured results, calibration references, departures from the procedure and the agreed witness status. Approve substitutions only after assessing their effect on the qualification. A generic certificate or a photograph of a test machine is not evidence that the supplied cable met the agreed program.
