A festoon cable is repeatedly bent as the trolleys gather and spread. Cold weather can make this duty more demanding, but a low-temperature material-test result is not equivalent to a long-duration movement qualification. Specify both the environmental limits and the actual handling geometry.
What a cold-bend result means
IEC 60811-504 provides a low-temperature bending procedure for extruded insulation and sheaths. The applicable product specification determines how the method is used and the required conditions. A reference to this method does not mean that every cable has passed at −40°C, or that every specimen uses the same mandrel and conditioning sequence.
Ask which component was tested, at what temperature, with what conditioning and acceptance criteria. Distinguish storage, installation and moving-service temperature ranges. A cable that tolerates cold storage may still need warming before installation or may have a different minimum temperature while flexing.
Define the festoon movement test
- State flat or round construction, dimensions, specimen length, trolley support, clamp arrangement and bend orientation.
- Record travel, speed, acceleration, cycle definition, bending radius, tension and any impact when trolleys collect.
- Include the relevant operating temperature and fluid exposure; separate tests may not capture combined ageing and movement.
- Define failure criteria for conductor continuity, insulation, sheath damage, screen integrity and any signal circuits before starting.
A count such as 1.5 million cycles is meaningful only with the full test conditions and results. It cannot be advertised as a property of every elastomer or conductor class. Fine stranding alone does not establish the endurance of the assembled cable.
Check the installed support system
Use the festoon-system manufacturer’s arrangement for cable stacks, support saddles, loop lengths and towing elements. Conductix guidance is system-specific; do not impose a universal stacking order or loop-depth percentage on every trolley arrangement. The cable must bend in the intended plane without being pinched, twisted or forced to carry loads assigned to the towing system.
Keep acceptance tests distinct
A sheath spark test is not a substitute for the specified finished-cable dielectric test. Oil immersion of material samples does not prove compatibility with every coolant mixture. A braid-coverage percentage does not by itself establish EMC performance or screen fatigue life. Request the correct method, specimen, acceptance limit and report for each property being claimed.
The factory inspection plan should identify routine checks on supplied lengths and the separate design-qualification evidence. Record the exact construction revision and any substitutions. Commissioning and periodic inspection remain necessary even when a representative cable has passed laboratory qualification.
