Application fit

Is TC / TC-ER right for your machine?

Type TC-ER passes the severe crush and impact tests of UL 2225 / UL 1277, permitting unsupported transition from ladder tray directly to field motors, junction boxes and control panels without intermediate EMT or rigid metal conduit.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Industrial ladder cable trays, raceways, outdoor pipe racks, direct burial and exposed transitions to machinery.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between Type TC and Type TC-ER under NEC Article 336?
Standard UL 1277 Type TC ('Tray Cable') must remain enclosed inside a cable tray, raceway or conduit throughout its run. Type TC-ER ('Exposed Run') passes the much tougher crush and impact tests originally developed for metal-clad (MC) cable, allowing the cable to exit the tray and run unsupported for up to 6 ft (or longer when mechanically supported in industrial establishments under NEC 336.10(7)) directly to motors and control cabinets without conduit.
What is the difference between THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW-2 core insulation in TC-ER cables?
THHN/THWN-2 uses flame-retardant PVC with an extruded clear nylon armour skin, giving a smaller overall cable diameter and high oil/chemical resistance (+90 °C dry / +75–90 °C wet). XHHW-2 uses thermoset cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), providing lower dielectric capacitance, +250 °C short-circuit rating and +90 °C continuous rating in both wet and dry locations.
Can TC-ER be used in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations?
Yes. Under NFPA 70 (NEC) Article 501.10(B)(1)(6), Type TC-ER cable (including an equipment grounding conductor) is permitted in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations in industrial establishments.
How are conductors identified inside a TC-ER control cable?
Control sizes (18–10 AWG) are supplied with either ICEA S-73-532 Method 1 (Table E1 or E2 colour code) or Method 4 (black cores printed with sequential numbers plus a green or green-yellow grounding conductor).
