Application fit

Is RG-62-U / RG-62B-U right for your machine?

Specify RG-62A/U and RG-62B/U for ARCNET 2.5 Mbps industrial token-bus networks, IBM 3270 coaxial terminal systems, NIM/CAMAC nuclear physics fast-pulse detectors, and low-capacitance piezoelectric/capacitance sensors.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Air-spaced semi-solid PE core cuts capacitance to 44.3 pF/m (13.5 pF/ft), preserving fast pulse edges on long sensor/ARCNET runs.

Switchgear & control cabinet wiring

Suitable

RG-62B/U uses a 7×30 AWG stranded copper-clad steel center conductor to resist flex fatigue on NIM rack patch panels.

VFD inverter to AC motor screened feeder

Suitable

95 % coverage bare copper braid shields high-impedance charge-amplifier and ARCNET signals from switching noise.

Immersion & wet locations

Not suitable

Air-spaced semi-solid core channel must be kept dry with sealed BNC boots; for flooded ducts, specify solid/foam watertight coaxial cables.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does RG-62A/U achieve 93 Ω characteristic impedance and 44.3 pF/m ultra-low capacitance inside the same 6.15 mm (.242") diameter as 75 Ω RG-59?
Instead of a solid PE core, RG-62A/U extrudes an open polyethylene monofilament helix around a thin 22 AWG (Ø 0.64 mm) center conductor inside a thin PE tube. Because the dielectric volume is mostly air (εr ≈ 1.42, 84 % VoP), characteristic impedance rises to 93 Ω ± 5 Ω and capacitance drops to 44.3 pF/m (13.5 pF/ft)—less than half the capacitance of 50 Ω RG-58 (101 pF/m).
What is the difference between RG-62A/U and RG-62B/U?
RG-62A/U (M17/30-RG062) has a solid 22 AWG (Ø 0.64 mm) copper-clad steel center conductor for fixed conduit and tray runs, whereas RG-62B/U uses a 7×30 AWG stranded copper-clad steel center conductor for flexing patch leads and vibrating equipment.
Why do nuclear physics NIM modules and high-impedance transducers specify 93 Ω RG-62?
Photomultiplier tubes, proportional counters, and piezoelectric/capacitance probes are easily loaded down by cable shunt capacitance. RG-62's 44.3 pF/m capacitance preserves fast nanosecond pulse edges and charge sensitivity over long coaxial runs.
Can RG-62 use standard RG-59 BNC connectors?
Both cables share a 6.15 mm (.242") jacket and 3.71 mm (.146") dielectric diameter, so mechanical crimp sleeves match, though true 93 Ω BNC plugs (or compatible 75 Ω BNC plugs with a 22 AWG center contact pin) must accommodate the thinner 22 AWG (0.64 mm) center wire.
