FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why do marine 6.6 kV distribution systems require thicker insulation (6.6/6.6 kV Category C) than onshore 3.8/6.6 kV cables?
Most shipboard 6.6 kV main switchboards operate with an isolated (IT) or high-resistance-grounded neutral so a single phase-to-hull earth fault does not trip main propulsion. During a single-line-to-earth fault, the two healthy phases rise to full line-to-line voltage (6.6 kV) against the copper screen, requiring 133 % / Category C insulation thickness.
When do marine engineers choose 3 × Single-Core (SPYC) versus 1 × Three-Core (TPYC) at 6.6 kV?
Three-core TPYC is used up to ~120–150 mm² where a single balanced cable simplifies tray routing. Above 150 mm² (such as 2,000–4,000 kW bow thrusters or main alternators), three-core cables become too heavy and stiff to bend into switchgear cubicles, so parallel runs of single-core SPYC with non-magnetic bronze armour are installed.
Is a halogen-free SHF1 version available for cruise ships and LNG carriers?
Yes. Both standard PVC-sheathed (SPYCY/TPYCY) and low-smoke zero-halogen SHF1-sheathed versions per IEC 60092-354 / IEC 60754-1/2 are supplied.
Do these cables fit standard 6.6 kV marine cold-shrink and heat-shrink terminations?
Yes. The easy-strip outer semi-conductive screen and copper tape shield are dimensionally compatible with standard 6.6/10 kV indoor/outdoor marine terminations.
