Construction

Layer by layer

A solid or concentric-stranded copper conductor—tin-, silver- or nickel-plated per style—is insulated with a uniform melt-extruded wall of fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) in thin-wall (0.15 mm Type KT), medium-wall (0.25 mm Type K / 0.33 mm UL 1332), thick-wall (0.38 mm Type KK) or heavy-wall (0.51 mm UL 1330 / UL 10203) geometry.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do NEMA HP 4 Types KT, K and KK differ from UL AWM Styles 1332, 1330 and 10203?
NEMA HP 4 (formerly MIL-W-16878) defines military/instrumentation thin-wall Type KT (250 V, 0.15 mm wall), medium-wall Type K (600 V, 0.25 mm wall) and thick-wall Type KK (1,000 V, 0.38 mm wall), rated 150 °C with tin-plated copper or 200 °C with silver/nickel-plated copper. UL 758 defines commercial appliance hook-up styles with heavier insulation walls rated 200 °C: Style 1332 (300 Vac, 0.33 mm wall), Style 1330 (600 Vac, 0.51 mm wall) and Style 10203 (1,000 Vac, 0.51 mm wall).
When should I choose extruded FEP instead of PTFE or PFA hook-up wire?
Choose FEP when your operating temperature is ≤ 200 °C and you need long, continuous, splice-free melt-extruded spool lengths at lower cost than PTFE or PFA. If continuous temperatures reach 250–260 °C or soldering-iron contact resistance is critical, select PTFE (NEMA HP 3) or PFA (UL 11905, 300 °C).
Why does NEMA HP 4 state 150 °C or 200 °C depending on conductor finish?
Tin plating begins to form brittle copper-tin intermetallics above 150 °C under MIL/NEMA aerospace rules, so tin-plated NEMA HP 4 wires are rated 150 °C while silver- or nickel-plated conductors unlock the full 200 °C thermal limit of FEP.
What is the minimum bending radius for FEP hook-up wire?
The recommended minimum bending radius is 6 × overall wire diameter for fixed cabinet/appliance routing and 10 × overall diameter where flexing occurs.
