Application fit

Is FAA L-824 Type B right for your machine?

Engineered for underground airport series lighting loops connecting Constant Current Regulators (CCRs) in the airfield vault to L-830 isolation transformers and L-823 primary connector kits.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Installed in underground airfield PVC/HDPE ducts, handholes, light-base cans and direct-buried runway shoulder trenches.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

EPR rubber core plus thermoset CPE jacket resists submerged handholes, aviation kerosene (Jet-A) and potassium-acetate runway de-icers.

Motor stator, traction & converter leads

Suitable

Significantly more flexible in cold weather than single-wall XLPE Type C cable, easing pull-in through tight L-867/L-868 light base cans.

Energy chain / drag chain

Not suitable

Underground airfield distribution cable; not for continuous flexing drag chains.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between FAA L-824 Type B and FAA L-824 Type C airfield lighting cable?
FAA L-824 Type B uses a two-layer elastomeric system: 90 °C EPR rubber insulation covered by a separate protective CPE/CSP rubber jacket (per ICEA S-93-639). FAA L-824 Type C uses cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation—commonly as a single-layer unshielded wall (per ICEA S-95-658) or with a jacket when shielded. Type B is much more flexible for coiling inside L-867 light base cans and offers superior mechanical cut-through protection from its separate CPE jacket.
Why are airport runway lighting circuits rated 5,000 V when each LED or quartz fixture only drops a few volts?
Airport runway lights are wired in a single constant-current series loop (typically 6.6 A or 20 A) fed by a Constant Current Regulator (CCR) so every lamp along a 4 km runway illuminates at identical brightness. Because hundreds of L-830 isolation transformers are connected in series, the total loop voltage at the CCR output reaches up to 3,000–5,000 V.
When should we specify Shielded vs Non-Shielded L-824 Type B cable?
Non-Shielded 8 AWG Type B is the most widely installed version in PVC duct banks with a counterpoise wire installed above the duct. Copper-Tape Shielded Type B is specified in high-lightning zones, direct-buried trenches, or where primary lighting cables run parallel to sensitive ILS/glide-slope navigation cables.
Is this cable compatible with standard FAA L-823 primary connector kits?
Yes. Both the conductor OD and overall jacket OD are held to FAA AC 150/5345-7F tolerances to ensure watertight interference fits with standard L-823 plug and receptacle elastomers.
