FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why is FAA L-824 Type C 8 AWG Non-Shielded the most widely installed airfield lighting cable in North America?
Its single-wall 110 mil (2.80 mm) cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) construction produces a slim 9.8 mm outer diameter (vs 12.2 mm for jacketed EPR/CPE Type B), lower weight (135 kg/km vs 195 kg/km), lower cost, and a hard, low-friction surface that pulls through long underground PVC duct banks with minimal tension.
When should an airport engineer choose L-824 Type B (EPR/CPE) instead of L-824 Type C (XLPE)?
Choose Type B (EPR/CPE) when installations take place in cold winter climates where XLPE becomes stiff to coil inside shallow L-867/L-868 base cans, or where the separate elastomeric CPE jacket is desired for cushion against sharp rocky backfill.
Why does 5 kV L-824 Type C require an extruded semiconducting layer over the 8 AWG conductor?
Even on unshielded 5 kV series loops, the stranded 8 AWG conductor has a small radius of curvature that creates high electric field gradients at the strand ridges. The smooth extruded semiconducting conductor screen equalizes the electric stress at the inner XLPE boundary, preventing partial discharge and water-tree initiation.
Can L-824 Type C be ordered with factory colour-coded stripes for multi-circuit ducts?
Yes. When multiple runway and taxiway loops share the same duct bank and handholes, Type C is supplied with permanent co-extruded Red, Blue, Yellow, Green or White longitudinal stripes for instant circuit identification.
