FAQ

How does running a Cat.5e cable inside the same outer sheath as 230 V / 400 V power cores comply with BS 7671 Regulation 528.1?
BS 7671 Regulation 528.1 permits Band I (ELV data/CT) and Band II (LV mains power) circuits in the same multicore cable provided the Band I conductors are insulated for the highest voltage present or separated by an earthed metallic screen. In ConnectEV, the 4-pair Cat.5e sub-cable has both a 100 % aluminum/Mylar foil screen with tinned copper drain wire AND its own 300/500 V dielectric LSZH jacket tested to 4.0 kV against the XLPE power cores.
Can the 4-pair Cat.5e sub-cable be used for both a CT clamp and hardwired Ethernet at the same time?
100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet (which all smart OCPP EV chargers use) only requires 2 pairs (Pins 1-2 Orange and Pins 3-6 Green), leaving the Blue and Brown pairs free for a CT clamp or RS-485 Modbus energy meter—or all 4 pairs can be terminated to an RJ45 for Gigabit Ethernet.
When do I need to step up from ConnectEV (unarmoured) to ConnectEV SWA (steel wire armoured)?
If the cable is buried directly underground across a driveway/garden or routed in an unprotected external location subject to mechanical damage (or buried < 50 mm deep in a wall without earthed metallic protection per BS 7671 Reg 522.6.202), choose ConnectEV SWA.
What if the project specification calls for Cat.6A 10GBASE-T S/FTP instead of Cat.5e?
Specify our EV ProInstall Cat6A (LSZH EV Charge-Point Power & Cat.6A Hybrid Cable).
