FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does Type E (EX) generate the highest millivolt output of any standard thermocouple?
Type E pairs the most electropositive base-metal thermocouple leg (Nickel-Chromium, + NiCr) with the most electronegative base-metal leg (Copper-Nickel, − CuNi). Their combined Seebeck coefficient reaches ~68 µV/°C at +100 °C (rising to ~81 µV/°C at +500 °C) — 67 % higher than Type K (~40.6 µV/°C), giving superior signal-to-noise ratio over long cable runs.
Why is Type EX specified instead of Type KX or JX near strong magnetic fields or in damp environments?
Type K contains a magnetic NiAl negative wire and Type J contains a ferromagnetic Iron positive wire that also rusts in humid air. Both conductors in Type EX (NiCr and CuNi) are completely non-ferromagnetic and corrosion-resistant.
How do I distinguish the NiCr (+) and CuNi (−) conductors if both are non-magnetic?
In addition to the insulation colour (IEC: + Violet / − White; ANSI: + Purple / − Red), the Positive (+ NiCr) conductor has ~44 % higher DC resistance than the Negative (− CuNi) conductor (0.71 Ω/m vs 0.49 Ω/m at 1.0 mm²).
How should the screen and drain wire of EX / Type E extension be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of EX / Type E extension should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
