Application fit

Is ConnectEV SWA right for your machine?

Solves the #1 headache in outdoor EV charger installations: burying a separate unarmoured Cat.5e cable in a duct alongside an SWA power cable. ConnectEV SWA puts both the 90 °C XLPE power cores and the screened Cat.5e data/CT cable inside one galvanized Steel Wire Armour ring.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Approved under BS 7671 Regulation 522.8.10 for direct burial in underground trenches across driveways, gardens and car parks, as well.

Drilling jumbo & rotary mast feed

Suitable

Concentric galvanized Steel Wire Armour (SWA) protects both the 230/400 V power cores and the fragile Cat.5e data pairs against spade.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

Terminates into a single standard brass CW / BW 20S, 20 or 25 mm SWA gland at the EV pedestal or wallbox—eliminating twin-gland water.

TBM gantry & advancing tunnel reel

Suitable

Supplied as standard with a Low-Smoke Zero-Halogen (BS 6724 LSZH) outer sheath for safe routing from internal basement switchrooms out.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does ConnectEV SWA include a full-size Green/Yellow copper core (3G / 5G) when it already has galvanized Steel Wire Armour?
Although SWA armour can serve as a circuit protective conductor (CPC) when properly glanded, many plastic-enclosed domestic and commercial EV wallboxes have limited metal gland-plate strength, and BS 7671 Section 722 PME/TT earthing arrangements often benefit from a dedicated full-cross-section copper PE core. Including both the 3G/5G copper PE core AND the earthed SWA armour gives the electrician total flexibility.
How do you terminate ConnectEV SWA at the EV charger without cutting the Cat.5e data cable?
Ring-score the outer LSZH sheath and galvanized SWA wires at the gland point as normal, leaving the extruded inner polymeric bedding intact. Fit the brass CW SWA gland shroud and nut over the armour wires, then slit the soft inner bedding inside the charger enclosure to expose the 3G/5G XLPE power cores and the intact white/blue screened Cat.5e sub-cable.
Does the pressure of the Steel Wire Armour degrade the 100 MHz Cat.5e impedance?
No. The Cat.5e F/UTP sub-cable has its own circular extruded 300/500 V polymeric jacket plus non-hygroscopic fillers and an extruded inner bedding layer beneath the SWA wires, isolating the twisted pairs from radial armour compression.
When should I choose 3G10 mm² SWA instead of 3G6.0 mm² SWA for a 7.4 kW (32 A) single-phase charger?
At 32 A single-phase (230 V),BS 7671 limits lighting/power voltage drop (typically ≤ 3–5 %). 3G6.0 mm² (7.3 mV/A/m) handles runs up to ~45–48 m; for longer underground driveway/car-park runs from 48 m up to 80 m, step up to 3G10.0 mm² (4.4 mV/A/m).
