When should an offshore engineer specify BS 6883 versus BS 7917?
Specify BS 6883 for general flame-retardant (IEC 60332-3-22 Cat A) instrumentation, process telemetry and PLC circuits. Specify BS 7917 (with phlogopite mica-glass fire barrier tape over each conductor) for emergency shutdown (ESD), fire & gas detection, blow-out preventer (BOP) controls, and deluge systems that must continue operating during an active +750/+950 °C hydrocarbon fire.
What is the difference between ACS and AIS screening in BS 6883?
ACS (Armoured Collectively Screened) places a single overall aluminium/PET foil tape + tinned drain wire around the assembled bundle of pairs/triads. AIS (Armoured Individually Screened) adds an isolated foil screen and drain wire around each individual pair or triad in addition to the collective screen, preventing inter-pair crosstalk between analogue 4–20 mA loops and high-frequency pulse/HART signals.
Why does BS 6883 use Type SW4 outer sheathing?
BS 7655-2.6 Type SW4 is a heavy-duty thermoset elastomeric compound combining zero-halogen low-smoke fire performance (< 0.5 % HCl) with high tear resistance and immersion resistance to mineral oils, diesel fuel and synthetic drilling fluids.
Which cable glands fit BS 6883 GSWB armoured cables?
BS 6883 cables terminate with standard Ex d / Ex e marine & offshore barrier or compression glands designed for wire-braid armour (such as CMP Type E1FW/PX2K or Hawke 501/453/UNIV).
