Submersible Pump Cable Testing Guide: AD8 & Autoclave FAT

Specify pump-cable immersion using depth, pressure, fluid, temperature, joints and test evidence; AD8 alone is not a universal underwater rating.

Submersible pump cable selection starts with the complete installation: cable, motor entry, joints, glands and terminations. A sheath described as water-resistant does not establish the maximum depth, fluid compatibility or service duration of that assembly.

Interpret AD7 and AD8 with the product data

AD7 refers to immersion and AD8 to continuous submersion conditions. These classifications do not, by themselves, assign one pressure and temperature to every cable. For example, the cited LAPP H07RN8-F data sheet specifies fresh-water service up to 10 m and 40°C, with movement restrictions. That is evidence for the described product, not a universal approval for every similarly marked cable.

Special enhanced H07RN-F products may carry additional immersion conditions. Therefore neither “all H07RN-F is unsuitable underwater” nor “all H07RN8-F works at any depth” is a safe selection rule. Obtain the current data sheet for the exact supplied construction.

Describe the pressure environment

Use depth, fluid density and pressure reference consistently. Illustrative calculation: 50 m of fresh water at density 1000 kg/m³ gives about 0.49 MPa, or 4.9 bar, of hydrostatic gauge pressure using p = ρgh and g = 9.81 m/s². This is not a cable rating; pressure surges, temperature and assembly details still need assessment.

  • Specify fresh water, seawater, process fluid or contaminated water, including chemistry and temperature.
  • State continuous depth, pressure variation, operating duration and any installation or retrieval movement.
  • Identify tensile support, bends, abrasion points and whether the cable must carry its own suspended weight.
  • Include joints and motor entries in the qualification boundary; a cable-body test does not automatically qualify a field splice.

Separate the relevant tests

Water absorption of an insulation sample, longitudinal water penetration and external hydrostatic pressure on a complete assembly are different investigations. Agree which is needed and specify specimen preparation, exposure, measurements and acceptance criteria. A pressure qualification is not necessarily a routine test for every production drum.

Electrical checks before and after exposure should follow the applicable cable and motor requirements. Insulation resistance depends on length, temperature and test conditions. Do not apply a universal polarization-index threshold or reduce factory voltage by an arbitrary percentage for field testing; use the approved maintenance procedure and suitable equipment.

Approvals and release

For potable-water use, verify the current approval for the exact material or product, its conditions and the relevant jurisdiction. An approval does not mean zero migration of every substance. For ESP duties, check the scope of the applicable IEEE standard rather than substituting a general pump-cable test.

Pressure and electrical qualification should be conducted by competent facilities with approved safety arrangements. Request traceable results, assembly drawings and installation limits before accepting the cable for its stated depth.
