Seven conductors do not define a complete wireline specification
A seven-conductor logging cable combines electrical circuits with a load-bearing mechanical construction. The names 7Q38, 7H42 and 7J46 are useful procurement identifiers only when tied to a manufacturer and drawing revision. Do not infer an insulation material, temperature limit, working pressure or breaking load from the letters alone.
Obtain the actual conductor sizes, resistance, capacitance, armour alloy and lay, diameter tolerance, air and submerged mass, operating tension and temperature/pressure envelope. Confirm compatibility with the tool string, winch, sheaves, cable head and pressure-control equipment.
Mechanical and environmental qualification
Armour rotation and the difference between ends-free and ends-fixed test conditions matter. Manufacturer SLB describes polymer-locked armour as one approach to controlling torque in its own TuffLINE design; its published ratings must not be transferred to a different conventional heptacable.
Specify the well fluid, H2S and CO2 conditions, temperature, pressure and exposure time. Sour-service suitability depends on alloy condition and the applicable environmental limits, not merely a material trade name. Require documented metallurgical assessment rather than calling an alloy corrosion-proof.
The cable head, weak point and operating procedure must be coordinated with the complete conveyance system. Minimum breaking load is not allowable working tension.
Depth correction needs calibrated inputs
Elastic extension depends on tension along the cable, submerged weight, tool load and the cable-specific stretch relationship. Thermal expansion, constructional settling, pressure effects and measurement-wheel slip also affect depth. Calibration must cover the actual operating conditions.
Illustrative arithmetic only: a hypothetical uniform 1,000 m member with effective thermal expansion of 12 × 10⁻⁶/K and a 50 K temperature rise would extend 0.60 m. This is not a wireline depth correction: real wells have temperature and tension profiles and cable-specific behavior.
Request calibrated stretch curves, conditioning history, measurement uncertainty and the operator’s depth-correlation procedure. Do not claim sub-metre perforation accuracy from a generic cable equation.
Acceptance and handling
Agree electrical tests, insulation checks, armour condition, dimensional inspection and mechanical qualification before purchase. Distinguish destructive sample tests from routine checks on a delivered length. Record drum traceability and repair/splice history.
Follow the equipment and cable manufacturers’ procedures for installation, spooling tension, inspection, cleaning and retirement. Unexpected tension or damaged armour requires qualified assessment, not a stronger replacement chosen from an unverified table.
Primary references and specification evidence
The references explain the cited technology or manufacturer example. They are not TEBAOFLEX product approvals or evidence that a supplied batch has passed the tests. Request the exact product drawing, specification edition, acceptance criteria and traceable records.
