Three heating architectures
Self-regulating cable changes local heat output with temperature through its conductive polymer heating element. Parallel constant-wattage designs use resistance heating zones; series mineral-insulated designs use resistance conductors within mineral insulation and a metal sheath.
Each family has product-specific output curves, maintain-temperature limits, exposure limits and circuit-length restrictions. Do not impose a universal 120 °C or 200 °C technology boundary: documented products and operating conditions differ. General-wiring MI cable is not automatically a qualified heater.
Calculate the pipe demand first
Include pipe size, maintained temperature, minimum ambient, insulation properties, wind, supports, valves and installation details. Heat-up duty can differ from steady-state temperature maintenance. Wet or damaged insulation changes performance and needs attention.
Illustrative steady-state model: q = F × 2πkΔT / [ln(D2/D1) + 2k/(D2h)]. Here F is an assumed design allowance, k the insulation conductivity, D1/D2 the insulation inner/outer diameters and h an effective external heat-transfer coefficient. This simplified model does not include every fitting or transient.
With F = 1.25, k = 0.038 W/(m·K), ΔT = 70 K, D1 = 0.1143 m, D2 = 0.2143 m and h = 30 W/(m²·K), q is approximately 32.6 W/m. These are hypothetical inputs. A cable supplying only 32.2 W/m at the actual maintained temperature would not meet that stated demand before any additional allowances.
Use the output at operating conditions
The nominal watts per metre at a reference temperature are not necessarily the delivered output at the maintained pipe temperature. Use the manufacturer curve at the actual supply voltage and installation conditions. Additional passes or spiralling require an engineered layout and the product installation instructions.
Maximum exposure temperature may differ when energized and de-energized, and exposure duration can matter. Select sheath and accessories for chemicals and cleaning or steam-out conditions. Do not derive a heater rating solely from the melting point of its insulation.
Coordinate cold start and protection
Self-regulating cable can draw substantially more current at cold start than in warm operation. Use the manufacturer circuit-length and breaker tables with the actual startup temperature and supply voltage. There is no universal three-to-five-times multiplier or automatic Type C/Type D solution.
Increasing a breaker rating without checking supply conductors, heater bus wires, accessories, fault protection and disconnection is unsafe. Select ground-fault protection through the approved system design and applicable rules; it is separate from a casual connection of a device to the braid. Equipment ground-fault protection and personnel shock protection must not be confused.
Controls, overlaps and commissioning
Self-regulation does not mean the system can be installed without all temperature controls or limiting required by the application. Overlapping is permitted only when the particular product instructions allow it. Constant-wattage and MI layouts also need their specified spacing and control arrangements.
Commission continuity, insulation, bonding, controller functions and protective devices using the manufacturer procedure. Record circuit lengths, startup conditions and test results. A separate leak-detection cable is not a heater, and a third-party trade name does not establish TEBAOFLEX ownership or qualification.
Primary references and specification evidence
The references explain the cited technology or manufacturer example. They are not TEBAOFLEX product approvals or evidence that a supplied batch has passed the tests. Request the exact product drawing, specification edition, acceptance criteria and traceable records.
