Physical contact and expanded beam solve different problems
Physical-contact fiber connections bring carefully prepared end faces together. Cleanliness, alignment and end-face condition are important to achieving the specified insertion and return loss. A rugged shell does not make a contaminated ferrule harmless.
Expanded-beam designs use optics to enlarge the beam across a non-contacting interface. This can reduce sensitivity to some contamination and mating wear, but does not eliminate the need for cleaning, inspection and protection. Water films, damaged lenses and large deposits can still impair operation.
Use product-specific loss values
Some expanded-beam products trade higher connection loss for easier handling in demanding environments. Neither a universal 1.2 dB expanded-beam loss nor a universal 0.35 dB physical-contact loss is valid across all designs, fiber types and wavelengths.
Match single-mode or multimode fiber, wavelength, polish/interface type, polarity and mating compatibility. A similar-looking military-style connector does not establish that two products can be mixed. TFOCA and other named commercial designs require their own documented parts and performance.
A transparent optical-budget example
Assume eight mated interfaces at 0.35 dB each and 3.5 km of fiber at 0.35 dB/km. The estimated loss is 8 × 0.35 + 3.5 × 0.35 = 4.025 dB before splices, repairs and engineering margin. These are hypothetical inputs, not measured TEBAOFLEX results.
Compare worst-case installed loss with the actual transmitter/receiver budget and the allowed link penalty. Count mated interfaces, not merely drums. Verify both transmission directions where relevant and retain margin for environmental changes and maintenance.
Do not confuse inspection methods
IEC 61300-3-35 concerns visual inspection of fiber-optic connector end faces. IEC 61300-3-47 concerns end-face geometry measured using interferometry. A microscope contamination check and an interferometric geometry measurement answer different questions.
Use inspection methods suitable for the actual optical interface. Follow the connector maker cleaning instructions; do not apply an arbitrary rinse or solvent to every lens, seal or ferrule. Inspect safely and never look into a potentially energized fiber.
Deployment and acceptance
Specify abrasion, crush, tensile load, bending, water exposure, mating cycles and contamination scenarios with their test conditions. A jacket material or a heavy shell is not proof of survival under a vehicle wheel.
Use insertion-loss testing for end-to-end acceptance and OTDR with appropriate launch/receive arrangements for event diagnosis. Dead zones can obscure closely spaced connections; a trace alone should not replace the agreed link-loss test. Keep protective caps, spare assemblies and a controlled repair procedure available in the field.
Primary references and specification evidence
The references explain the cited technology or manufacturer example. They are not TEBAOFLEX product approvals or evidence that a supplied batch has passed the tests. Request the exact product drawing, specification edition, acceptance criteria and traceable records.
