Encoder vs Resolver Cable: Capacitance and Supply Voltage Drop

Technical article

Size encoder and resolver cables for supply drop, signal integrity, interface compatibility and actual motion rather than cable length alone.

Start with the feedback interface

Encoder is a device category, not a single electrical interface. Determine the exact protocol, supply range, current demand, connector pinout and equipment-approved cable. EnDat, HIPERFACE and DRIVE-CLiQ must not be assumed to share a 5 V supply or identical wire allocation.

A resolver typically uses excitation and sine/cosine feedback circuits; its cable must suit the resolver and conversion electronics together. A conductor count or a green outer jacket cannot establish interchangeability with an encoder assembly.

Check supply voltage at the device

For a simple two-wire DC feed, voltage drop is current multiplied by the total outgoing and return resistance. Include connector resistance and the higher resistance at operating temperature. Starting or transient demand may be more restrictive than nominal current.

Hypothetical example: a 10 m one-way run with resistance 0.138 ohm/m per conductor and a 0.25 A load drops 2 × 10 × 0.138 × 0.25 = 0.69 V before connector allowances. A nominal 5 V source would then deliver only 4.31 V. This is an assumed example, not a standardized resistance limit or a tested cable.

Remote sense can compensate for part of the distribution drop only when both equipment and wiring support it. Check compensation limits and failure behavior. Adding sense conductors to a device that lacks the function does not improve its supply.

Signal integrity is not just capacitance

Compare pair arrangement, characteristic impedance, capacitance, attenuation, propagation delay and shield termination with the interface requirements. For a fast digital signal, a long cable is a transmission line; a lumped RC estimate does not prove protocol operation.

Maintain the specified pairing and return paths through the connector. Avoid unapproved adapters and untwisted breakout lengths. Confirm maximum cable length using the encoder and drive documentation, followed by tests at the actual data rate and installation conditions.

Resolver accuracy needs balanced paths

Resolver angle reconstruction uses both sine and cosine information with quadrant handling, commonly represented mathematically by atan2. Simple division followed by a one-quadrant arctangent is incomplete.

Unequal loading, phase shift, excitation drop and interference can create angle error. Matching the two signal channels helps, but does not cancel every cable effect or guarantee a universal 100 m reach. Verify excitation and feedback at the converter under the specified load and frequency.

Motion and acceptance

Specify fixed, drag-chain or torsional duty, together with minimum bending radius, speed, acceleration, temperature and expected service cycles. Conductor class alone does not establish dynamic endurance.

Test pin-to-pin continuity, shield connection and the permitted insulation checks with sensitive electronics disconnected as instructed. Complete functional testing with the actual drive and feedback device. Record the approved assembly identity so a later repair does not silently change its electrical properties.
