Construction

Layer by layer

Two parallel stranded tinned-copper (or nickel-plated copper on HSR) bus wires are extruded within a radiation-crosslinked semi-conductive PTC carbon-polymer heating matrix, insulated with a cross-linked polyolefin or fluoropolymer primary dielectric, screened by a ≥ 70 % tinned-copper earthing braid and protected by a polyolefin (-CR) or fluoropolymer (-CT) outer jacket.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does a self-regulating PTC heat tracing cable adjust its output along the pipe?
Current flows between the two parallel copper bus wires through a radiation-crosslinked carbon-loaded polymer core with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC). Where pipe temperature drops, the polymer contracts microscopically and establishes more conductive carbon paths, increasing local heat output; as the pipe warms, the polymer expands and reduces power automatically.
Can self-regulating heating cable be cut to length in the field and overlapped on valves?
Yes. Because the heating matrix is extruded continuously in parallel between the two bus conductors, the tape can be cut to any required length on site without altering its W/m rating. Its self-limiting PTC curve also allows single overlaps on valves, flanges and pumps without overheating.
How do I choose between the LSR, MSR and HSR temperature series?
Select LSR (10–30 W/m, T6) for water freeze protection and winterisation up to +65 °C (+85 °C exposure). Choose MSR (15–45 W/m, T4) for process lines maintained up to +110 °C (+135 °C exposure). Specify HSR (15–60 W/m, T3) for lines maintained up to +150 °C or exposed to +215 °C power-off steam purging.
When should I specify the fluoropolymer (-CT) outer jacket instead of polyolefin (-CR)?
The cross-linked polyolefin (-CR) overjacket is suitable for dry or aqueous outdoor piping, water lines and non-corrosive industrial environments. Specify the fluoropolymer (-CT) outer jacket whenever the cable may contact hydrocarbon spills, organic solvents, acids, alkalis or corrosive chemical vapours.
