Application fit

Is RTD Extension Cable right for your machine?

Because a Pt100 sensor changes resistance by only 0.385 Ω/°C, even a 0.1 Ω mismatch between leadwires in a 3-wire bridge causes a 0.26 °C measurement error. Our RTD extension cables draw all three or four cores from the same copper lot with matched lay length.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Supplied in process PVC, XLPE/LSZH, cleanroom/autoclave FEP/PTFE (−190…+260 °C) and SWA armoured multi-triad trunks.

TBM gantry & advancing tunnel reel

Suitable

SWA armoured execution (RTD-XLPE-SWA) protects underground refinery, LNG and tank-farm Pt100 multi-triad trunks.

Offshore platform & shipboard deck trays

Suitable

UV-stabilised outer sheaths and tinned/silver-plated copper conductors resist moisture and oxidation.

Energy chain / drag chain

With conditions

Class 5 stranded SPC/FEP and PUR sensor leads support moderate flexing; fixed process triads use Class 2 stranding.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does an RTD use copper extension cable whereas a thermocouple requires special alloy cable?
A thermocouple generates a microvolt Seebeck voltage along the temperature gradient of the wires, so its extension cable must replicate the thermocouple alloys. An RTD (such as a Pt100 or Pt1000) is a passive platinum resistor measured by passing a small constant excitation current through the leads. Therefore, RTDs require high-conductivity, low-resistance, resistance-balanced Copper (or Silver/Nickel-plated Copper) cores rather than thermocouple alloys.
When should I specify 4-wire (quad) instead of 3-wire (triad) RTD cable?
A 3-wire triad compensates for lead resistance assuming all three wires have identical resistance, which is sufficient for Class B (±0.30 °C) and standard Class A (±0.15 °C) process loops. For Class AA (±0.10 °C), fiscal custody-transfer metering, pharmaceutical validation, or long cable runs with terminal junctions, specify a 4-wire quad (Red/Red/White/White) so the transmitter measures voltage drop directly across the Pt100 element with zero leadwire resistance error.
Why are Silver-Plated Copper (SPC) or Nickel-Plated Copper (NPC) conductors used in FEP/PTFE RTD cables?
Standard tin plating melts and diffuses into copper during high-temperature fluoropolymer extrusion (~380 °C) and oxidises above +150 °C. Silver-plated copper (SPC) operates continuously to +200 °C with lower contact resistance, while Nickel-plated copper (NPC) operates continuously to +260 °C.
How should the screen and drain wire of RTD Extension Cable be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of RTD Extension Cable should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
