FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why can three-core RG7H1OZR use galvanized steel wire armour ('Z'), whereas single-core MV cables cannot use magnetic steel armour?
In a three-core cable like RG7H1OZR, the instantaneous vector sum of the three balanced phase currents (I₁ + I₂ + I₃) inside the armour ring is zero, so no alternating magnetic flux induces hysteresis or eddy-current heating in the steel wires. On a single-core AC cable, steel wire armour would act as a shorted transformer turn and overheat unless non-magnetic aluminum wire armour is used.
Why does RG7H1OZR have both individual H1 copper screens AND outer Z steel wire armour?
They serve two separate engineering functions: the individual H1 copper screens immediately over each phase core's outer semiconducting layer confine the 12/20 kV electric field radially and carry phase-to-earth capacitive/fault currents, while the outer galvanized steel wire armour ('Z') over the inner bedding ('O') provides mechanical crush, impact and tensile protection.
What is the difference between 'Z' (round steel wire) and 'N' (double steel tape) armour in CEI designations?
'Z' designates galvanized round steel wire armour (SWA), which provides both radial crush protection and high axial tensile strength for long pulls and vertical shafts. 'N' designates helically wound double steel tape armour (STA), which resists radial crush in horizontal trenches but cannot take high pulling tension.
How is RG7H1OZR terminated inside a 15 kV or 20 kV switchgear cell?
The outer PVC sheath and steel wire armour ('Z') are glanded and earthed at the switchgear entry plate; above the gland, a 3-core heat-shrink or cold-shrink breakout boot seals the crutch, and the three individually copper-screened RG7H1 cores are terminated exactly like single-core RG7H1R cables.
