Application fit

Is WD-1-TT / WD-1A-TT right for your machine?

Select WD-1/TT (twisted pair for reel recovery) or WD-1A/TT (lightly bonded parallel pair for high-speed canvas/pack dispensing) for military field telephones, SHDSL tactical modems, and blasting/firing lines.

Trailing & towing

Suitable

4×Sn-Cu + 3×steel strands per core yield ≥ 890 N (200 lbf) break strength for ground, tree, and vehicle payout.

Cylindrical / multi-layer drum

Suitable

Dispenses from DR-8, RL-159/U, or MX-306/G reels; tough Nylon skin slides over rocks without snagging.

Immersion & wet locations

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between WD-1/TT and WD-1A/TT?
Both use the exact same 4×tinned-copper + 3×galvanised-steel conductors, HDPE insulation, and olive-drab Nylon outer skin per MIL-DTL-13075. In WD-1/TT the two insulated conductors are helically twisted together so the cable can be payed out and recovered repeatedly on RL-159/U or DR-8 reels. In WD-1A/TT the two conductors are lightly bonded side-by-side so they pay out from coreless MX-306/G dispenser packs at high speed (vehicle or aircraft deployment) without kinking.
Why does each conductor combine 4 tinned copper strands with 3 galvanised steel strands?
Pure annealed copper wire stretches and snaps when pulled across rough terrain, suspended between trees, or driven over by tactical vehicles. Combining 3 high-carbon galvanised steel core strands with 4 outer tinned copper strands gives a breaking load ≥ 890 N (200 lbf) while keeping DC loop resistance ≤ 148 Ω/km.
How do signal troops identify conductor polarity in total darkness?
One of the two Nylon-jacketed conductors has a continuous raised longitudinal ridge (rib) moulded into its outer surface so operators can feel Tip/Ring polarity by touch during night splicing.
When should I choose 2-pair WF-16/U over 1-pair WD-1/TT?
Choose 2-pair WF-16/U (MIL-C-55686) when four-wire full-duplex data/voice circuits or conditioned digital trunks are needed in a single payout run.
