FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between Type MG and UL AWM Style 5107?
Both use a 27% nickel-clad copper (or pure nickel) conductor insulated with helically lapped mica tapes and an outer treated fiberglass braid rated for 600 V and 450 °C. Type MG is the traditional North American furnace/heater lead designation, whereas UL AWM Style 5107 is the formal UL 758 Appliance Wiring Material component recognition.
Why is 27% nickel-clad copper required instead of tinned or silver-plated copper at 450 °C?
Tin coatings melt near 232 °C and silver-plated copper oxidizes above 200–260 °C. A heavy 27% metallurgical nickel cladding (ASTM B355 Class 27) prevents copper scaling and progressive contact resistance rise during continuous 450 °C operation.
Why can mica-glass wire emit slight smoke during its very first heating cycle above 250 °C?
The outer fiberglass braid is finished with a high-temperature organic saturant binder to prevent fraying during cutting and stripping. On the first excursion above 250–300 °C, trace binder volatiles bake out while the inorganic E-glass and mica dielectric remain intact.
Can Type MG / UL 5107 be used in wet or washdown locations?
No. Braided mica-tape insulation is a breathable dry-heat dielectric system. For wet, condensing or chemical washdown service up to +250/+300 °C, select melt-extruded PFA (UL 11905) or FEP hook-up wire.
