FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between a 4-pin and a 5-pin M12 A-coded cordset for IO-Link?
IO-Link Port Class A masters and devices use a standard 4-wire connection (Pin 1: L+ 24V, Pin 2: DI/DO, Pin 3: L- 0V, Pin 4: C/Q IO-Link data) and work with either 4-pin or 5-pin cordsets. IO-Link Port Class B devices (such as valve islands and smart actuators) require a 5-pin cordset because Pins 2 and 5 carry an isolated auxiliary 24 V actuator power supply.
Why are 3-pin M12 A-coded female connectors often wired to Pins 1, 3, and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3?
Per EN 60947-5-2 proximity switch wiring standards, a 3-wire Normally Open (NO) sensor uses Pin 1 (Brown, +24V), Pin 3 (Blue, 0V), and Pin 4 (Black, switching output), leaving Pin 2 unpopulated so the same 4-hole female contact carrier mates with both 3-pin and 4-pin male sensor receptacles.
When should I specify the 360° EMC shielded (-SHD) M12 A-coded version?
Specify the 360° braided-shield version whenever routing 4–20 mA / 0–10 V analogue signals, RS-485/Modbus RTU, CANopen, or SSI/incremental encoder signals near variable-frequency motor drives, where capacitive coupling would corrupt unshielded sensor lines.
Can M12 A-coded cordsets mate with M12 D-coded, L-coded, or X-coded ports?
No. IEC 61076-2-101/109/111 uses distinct mechanical keyway lugs inside the M12 shell for each coding (A, B, D, X, L, K, S, T, Y) so a 24 V sensor cable can never be plugged into an Ethernet switch or a 630 V power port.
