FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why cannot a standard J-Y(St)Y 2×2×0.8 telephone cable be used as a KNX bus cable?
Standard grey telephone cables are only tested at 800 V AC. Because KNX is a SELV (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) bus routed directly inside distribution boards and wall conduits alongside 230/400 V AC mains cables, EN 50090 requires the green KNX outer sheath to pass a 4.0 kV AC dielectric test to guarantee basic insulation separation.
What are the two pairs (Red/Black and White/Yellow) used for in a 2×2×0.8 KNX cable?
The Red (+) and Black (-) pair carries the 29–30 V DC SELV bus power and 9600 bps KNX TP1 telegrams via Red/Black push-wire terminals. The White and Yellow pair provides an auxiliary 24/30 V DC supply for high-consumption room touch panels or serves as a spare pair.
Should the Al/PET foil screen and drain wire of a KNX cable be earthed?
No. Per KNX installation rules (Volume 5), the static Al/PET foil and 0.4 mm tinned drain wire act as an electrostatic capacitive balancing screen and must NOT be connected to protective earth (PE), avoiding 50 Hz building ground loops. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
What are the maximum cable length rules for a single KNX TP1 line segment?
A single KNX TP1 line segment using 2×2×0.8 mm cable (≤ 73.2 Ω/km loop resistance, ≤ 100 nF/km) supports up to 1,000 m total installed cable length, up to 350 m between the KNX choke power supply and any bus device, and up to 700 m between any two communicating devices.
