FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between a single-pair H1 spur/trunk cable and a multi-pair H1 homerun cable?
Single-pair (1×2×18 AWG) H1 cable connects field transmitters to field junction boxes (megablocks) or forms single trunks. Multi-pair homerun cables (2, 4, 8, or 12 individually foil-shielded 18 AWG pairs inside one overall screen and sheath) consolidate multiple H1 segments from field junction boxes back to the DCS marshalling room.
When should I choose 16 AWG over 18 AWG for FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1?
Standard 18 AWG (0.88 mm², ≤ 44 Ω/km loop resistance) satisfies the vast majority of 1,900 m H1 segments. When a trunk feeds 12–16 high-current field valves/transmitters over distances exceeding 1,200 m, stepping up to 16 AWG (1.31 mm², ≤ 28 Ω/km) reduces DC voltage drop and preserves minimum 9 V terminal voltage.
Why are FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 cores coloured Orange and Blue?
Per ISA SP50.02 and FieldComm Group wiring conventions, Orange identifies the positive fieldbus conductor (FF+) and Blue identifies the negative conductor (FF-), ensuring consistent polarity across power conditioners, segment protectors, and transmitters. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
Does FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 cable support FISCO and FNICO hazardous areas?
Yes. Both the 18 AWG and 16 AWG constructions meet all IEC 60079-27 / IEC 60079-11 Annex G distributed R', L', and C' parameters for FISCO (Zone 0/1 Ex ia/ib) and FNICO (Zone 2 / Division 2 non-incendive) fieldbus architectures. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
