FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between Type FPLP and Type FPLR fire alarm cable?
Type FPLP is plenum-rated and tested to NFPA 262 (UL 910) in a horizontal Steiner Tunnel under forced airflow, certifying low smoke density (peak ≤0.50) and minimal flame travel for HVAC return-air plenums. Type FPLR is riser-rated (UL 1666) for vertical shafts between floors and cannot be installed exposed inside environmental air plenums.
Can Type FPLP cable substitute for FPLR and FPL cables under NEC Article 760?
Yes. Under the NEC Table 760.154(A) cable substitution hierarchy, Type FPLP is the highest flame/smoke rating for power-limited fire alarm circuits and may be freely used in plenum spaces, vertical risers and general-purpose runs.
When should shielded FPLP be chosen over unshielded FPLP?
Shielded FPLP (with 100 % aluminum-Mylar foil tape and tinned copper drain wire) is recommended for addressable Signaling Line Circuits (SLC), RS-485 network trunks, and 25/70.7 Vrms voice evacuation audio lines to prevent crosstalk and EMI pickup.
How do you choose between 18 AWG, 16 AWG, 14 AWG and 12 AWG FPLP?
18 AWG and 16 AWG are standard for addressable SLC loops and short NAC runs. 14 AWG and 12 AWG provide lower loop resistance to limit voltage drop on long Notification Appliance Circuits (NAC) feeding high-candela LED/xenon strobes.
