FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What does the UL 1666 test verify on Type FPLR fire alarm cables?
UL 1666 simulates a multi-story building riser shaft using a 145 kW propane burner in a two-story vertical compartment. To qualify as Type FPLR, flame propagation along the vertical cable bundle must not reach 12 feet (3.66 m) and gas temperature at 12 feet must stay below 850 °F (454.4 °C).
Can Type FPLR cable be installed in ceiling spaces?
Type FPLR can be installed in vertical riser shafts, inside conduit, and above suspended ceilings that are NOT used for environmental return-air handling. If the space above the drop ceiling serves as an open HVAC return-air plenum without conduit, Type FPLP must be used.
What lower-grade cables can Type FPLR replace under the NEC?
According to NEC Table 760.154, Type FPLR is permitted to substitute for general-purpose Type FPL fire alarm cable as well as Type CMR and Type CL3R/CL2R riser cables.
How do installers calculate maximum NAC run length on FPLR?
Divide the maximum allowable voltage drop of the Notification Appliance Circuit (typically 2.0 to 3.0 V on a 24 VDC regulated panel output) by the total strobe alarm current, then select 16, 14 or 12 AWG FPLR based on the round-trip loop resistance in Ω/km.
